Amex Gold earns 4x on dining around the world

Heads up! We share savvy shopping and personal finance tips to put extra cash in your wallet. Android Central may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network.

Attention global travelers who like to dine out: Starting today, the American Express® Gold Card will now allow you to earn 4x points on dining on restaurants worldwide, not just those in the US as it was previously. This adds to the already long list of ways to earn valuable Membership Rewards® Points with the Gold card. As a refresher cardholders earn:

  • 35,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 in the first three months
  • 4x points at US supermarkets
  • 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com
  • 1 point per dollar everywhere else

With more ways to earn 4x on dining, the Gold card is a points earning machine that can lead to valuable rewards. And while your card will earn 4x on dining abroad now, you won't incur any foreign transaction fees.

Based on recent valuations, the points you earn are worth 2 cents per point. That means the sign up bonus alone is worth $700. Now with the ability to earn 4x on dining abroad, that valuation could go even higher. In fact, it's pretty difficult to find a card that does better on dining in general. And for this earning potential, you will be paying a $250 annual fee, which is far lower than some of the premium cards on the market which might not earn as much on dining.

So if you love to explore restaurants at home or abroad, there are few cards that will reward you as well as the Amex Gold card. This card particularly makes sense if you are averse to annual fees pushing $500 and can enjoy many of the other perks the card offers.
